The aim of this workshop is to present innovative and effective cognitive hypnotherapeutic techniques for the management of anxiety disorders. Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is based on the premise that identifying and changing maladaptive thoughts and beliefs alter negative feelings and unadaptive behaviors. In the treatment of anxiety disorders, CBT provides several evidence-based cognitive and behavioral strategies for restructuring fearful (catastrophic) thoughts and decreasing avoidance behaviors. Controlled trials, meta-analyses, and reviews demonstrate that when these strategies are combined with hypnotherapy the effect size increases.

In this workshop we will describe an integrative psychotherapy model for combining CBT with hypnosis in the management of anxiety disorders. The cognitive hypnotherapeutic interventions introduced and demonstrated will be particularly helpful in the interruption of obsessional thoughts, reduction of worries and ruminations, lessening fear of the future, and decreasing restlessness, irritability, insomnia, and hypochondria. We will also introduce several techniques from the "third wave approaches" such as mindfulness and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). An innovative way for harmonizing the mind, the body and the heart will also be demonstrated.

Participants will learn various cognitive hypnotherapeutic interventions that they can easily integrate in their clinical practice to enhance outcome and prevent relapse. Participants will be able to widen their clinical skills particularly with the following sub-groups within the 'family' of anxiety disorders: Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Specific Phobias, Social Anxiety, Panic Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to…
- Articulate the rationale for combining hypnosis with CBT in the management of anxiety disorders;
- Describe two hypnotic techniques that can be easily integrated with CBT in the
management of each sub-type of anxiety disorder; and
- Identify two interventions that can help clients observe the reduction of their somatic symptoms.
