Kimberly S Williams, PsyD is a clinical instructor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the NYU Langone Child Study Center.

With 1 in 110 individuals being diagnosed with autism today, dental professionals are encountering the challenges of providing care to these patients more than ever. This program will emphasize critical elements to the approach of the patientcaregiver involvement, elements of patient preparation, ideas for desensitization, and tips for preventive care and training. The didactic instruction will be followed by an opportunity to practice your newly acquired skills with trained mock patients who will role-play autism.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain why autism is often referred to as a “spectrum disorder”
  • State three areas of functioning impacted by autism and how they translate in the operatory
  • Name two teaching methods that are most effective in working with patients with autism
  • Describe the importance of caregiver involvement
  • Explain when desensitization is needed in working with this population
  • Demonstrate effective communication in a patient encounter
