The Public Switched Telephone Network, or PSTN, is the government regulated “landline” telephone system that we all grew up with and depend upon to this day. Trends in communications are causing the use of the PSTN to steadily decrease, in favor of cellular telephone and Voice over IP (VoIP) systems. Government abandonment of the PSTN is predicted by the end of this decade. However, in the fire alarm arena there are millions of digital dialers in use that will not work properly over cell phones or VoIP connections. The FCC is considering now what requirements will be placed on future communications systems that will replace the PSTN. This is the time to be heard about what the fire alarm industry needs for properly functioning communications.
