Between the years 2000 and 2010, nine out of the ten largest fires worldwide, when measured by number of lives lost, occurred in the developing world. This presentation will not only briefly review each of these fires, but will also apply NFPA codes and standards to these fires. Although technical information is not always available for some of these incidents, this presentation will review the available levels of fire protection, fire development, and what would have been required if NFPA codes and standards would have been utilized. Because most of these fires occurred outside of the United States, this information could be utilized by building officials, especially in developing nations, to evaluate if NFPA technical codes and standards are appropriate for their jurisdictions.
