Description:
During the typical day in a restorative practice hygienists and assistants see firsthand how joints, muscle and occlusion affect their patients. This course will discuss how to quickly screen your patients for temporomandibular joint, muscle and occlusal issues to gain a better understanding of stomatognathic health. TMJ pathofunction will be discussed in detail. You will also examine the various theories of occlusion and the types of problems they may be better suited for. This course will also cover occlusal wear and the causes of tooth breakdown in detail, as well as fabrication of provisional restorations that conform to an “ideal occlusion.”

Learning objectives:
Participants will be able to:

  • Gain a full understanding of the workings of the healthy temporomandibular joint, what can go wrong and how to examine for both
  • Perform a muscle screening
  • Familiarize yourself with the five major theories of occlusion
  • Better understand centric relation
  • Understand how teeth break down: attrition, erosion, abfraction and abrasion
  • Fabricate accurate and precise provisionals
