12195 (303) Overhead: What We Say, What We Mean and What Families Hear
Laura Miller

Abstract
This facilitated, interactive session will examine real-life words said by staff to families that were overheard and spoken in NICUs around the country. The words may have caused great distress and lifelong negative memories or they may have been transformative in the most positive of ways. As a group, we will examine the intent of the statements and the overall, presumable impact on the family and identify language choices that would have been more helpful and sensitive. This unique session is loved by nurses and enables participants to explore their own memories as patients and family caregivers and to think deeply about the impact of our words, the power of our role, and how each one of us can evolve and fine-tune our well-intended interventions.

Learning Objectives
1. Recognize the impact on families of at least three specific words or comments.
2. For the examples given, name at least three ways to enhance your language that would be more effective and sensitive.
3. Identify a personal experience with a health care provider and describe the intent and impact of the provider’s words or behavior.
