Long Term Weathering of Single Ply and Bituminous Commercial Roofing Membranes and Discussion of Testing Considerations

The course will present the product design considerations that manufacturers must evaluate to provide products suitable for their intended purposes and discuss how the industry looks today. The course will outline how the Xenon arc test for TPO and 90 day heat aging for asphalt are predictive for performance in the field. It will also cover failure modes for membranes and what these mean to various audiences. Material is for large, low slope applications and is presented at an intermediate level.

Learning Objectives:

1. Determine the importance of UV stabilizer packages for single ply membranes and how they affect material performance

2. Recognize the quality control of asphalt and asphalt blends to assure superior weatherproofing

3. Discuss failure modes of membranes during testing and translate that data into expected performance and longevity

4. Review the science behind materials and can have more confidence discussing performance characteristics with owners

Speaker(s): Nate Martin, Portfolio Manager, Bituminous Roofing Systems, Johns Manville

Target Audience: Commercial Contractor, Architect/Designer/Consultant, Building Owner/Facility Manager

Kim Deaton
, TPO Product Manager, Johns Manville, Kim began her career with JM in September of 2006 as a product engineer for the TPO product line. At that time, Kim played a critical role in the development of the JM TPO formulation that is now manufactured at Scottsboro, Alabama. Kim was essential in bringing the plant on-line in 2008. In 2010, Kim leveraged her formulation development experience and plant start-up knowledge to support the introduction of JM's very first EPDM production in Milan, OH, which formally launched manufacturing operations June 1, 2012. Kim holds a doctorate in Chemistry from the University of Illinois and received her B.A. in Chemistry and Mathematics from Carthage Collage. Kim also serves on many industry committees, specifically the American Standards for Test Methods (ASTM) and Single Ply Roofing Institute (SPRI) and is an American Chemical Society member.

Nate Martin, Portfolio Manager, Bituminous Roofing Systems, Johns Manville, has responsibility for APP, BUR, SBS and Cements & Coatings and also has responsibility for the Bituminous Product Engineering Team, enhancing the alignment between the business and technical sides of the portfolio. Nate joined JM in 2001 and has held several positions in Product Engineering, Product Development and in Technical Services. Nate most recently held the position Product Manager for Modified Bitumen. Nate has a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Colorado in Boulder and an MBA from the University of Denver. He attended the University of Colorado as a Boettcher Foundation Scholar.
