With the adoption of AC438 by ICC Evaluation Services, asphalt roofing shingles can be evaluated against a differing set of physical requirements beyond the traditionally understood ASTM standards. This session provides a comparison between the requirements of the ASTM standards referenced in the building codes and the alternative criteria developed by ICC Evaluation Services. As roofing manufacturers develop new products and submit them for evaluation under the alternative criteria AC438, an understanding of this criteria and the standard ASTM thresholds benefits roofing professionals. Session materialĀ is for all sizes residential companies and will be presented at a beginner/intermediate level.

Learning Objectives:

1. Cite the ASTM standards applicable to steep slope asphalt roofing products and understand the key requirements of each standard as they relate to asphalt roofing products

2. Recognize the differences in ICC Evaluation reports issued in accordance with current standards and the alternative Acceptance Criteria AC438

3. Determine the physical property testing required under AC438 4
