Northstar Bison is a family owned and operated, vertically integrated enterprise, that was birthed in 1994 with the purchase of two young bison from Bluemound State Park in Minnesota, to fulfill a life-long dream. Shortly after, we added six bred cows which contributed to the growth of the herd to fourteen. During that time, we decided to market the meat directly and formed the distribution division. In pursuit of learning how to raise and produce the highest quality meat, we realized that 100% grass-fed bison was the best all-around–good for land, animals and people. This became our motto. Our primary commitment is to producing quality product and offering excellent customer service.

The slaughter and processing was performed by a local processor until 2005, when NorthStar Bison purchased our current processing plant in Wisconsin. This has allowed for control of the processing schedule, a “field-kill” method of harvesting the bison, and creating recipes that match our commitment to high quality products. Our product specialties include fresh, unfrozen product weekly and processed, cooked products that are nitrite and MSG-free, 100% bison. The meat offerings have expanded to include bison, beef, elk, lamb, pastured poultry & pork. Our market includes retail customers and wholesale, ranging from restaurants to grocery outlets and a wholesale outlet at our processing facility in Rice Lake.

Today, we have 2500 acres of owned and rented grasslands in Northwest Wisconsin and East Central Minnesota, where 2000 bison are grazed under holistic resource management principles. In addition, we have developed very close working relationships with the ranchers in the upper Midwest who believe in the grass-fed production model and meet our criteria for raising this wonderful icon of the prairie.
