Hazardous materials storage, handling, and use occurs in many occupancies, not just those limited to industrial or miscellaneous purposes. NFPA 400, Hazardous Materials Code, includes materials in all hazard classes including flammables and combustibles, toxic, and unstable or reactive materials. The code, first issued in 2009, combined several existing standards for specific hazards and expanded coverage to encompass all hazards addressed in fire and building codes. Changes for this revision include modifications to the classification for oxidizers based on published research completed for the Fire Protection Research Foundation. In addition to an update on the new edition, this session also offers a tutorial on using the code - classification of hazards, MAQ and control area application, and protection requirements.
