Format: Download Video of Presenter plus Slides with Synchronized Audio

Presenter: Marc Penn, MD, PhD

For 30 years the field of cardiovascular risk prevention has focused on lowering cholesterol levels. The success of this approach is demonstrated by the significant decrease in the number transmural myocardial infarctions that occur annually. Unfortunately, now at least 50% of patients with acute myocardial infarction have normal or controlled cholesterol levels at presentation. Since controlled lipid levels no longer define low risk for cardiovascular events, the field has begun to focus on markers of inflammation to define cardiovascular risk. Markers of cardiovascular inflammation identify patients at risk, and a multimarker approach of vascular inflammation allows one to more completely define a patients risk, as well as determine the acuity of the risk.

Learning Objectives:
-> Role of lipid and inflammation markers in defining cardiovascular risk
-> Integration of imaging and markers of inflammation in defining cardiovascular risk
-> Strategies for mitigating cardiovascular risk
-> Role of markers of inflammation in defining acuity of cardiovascular risk
