The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), an independent federal regulatory agency, is charged with protecting the American public against unreasonable risks of injury and death from consumer products. The CPSC estimates an annual average of 362,000 unintentional residential structure fires occurred during the three-year period from 2009-2011, resulting in 2,260 civilian deaths, 12,820 injuries, and $6.68.billion in property loss. To mitigate the fire causes under its jurisdiction, the CPSC enacts and enforces mandatory fire safety standards for products such as children's sleepwear and mattresses, supports voluntary safety standards development and maintenance, and performs consumer and industry education. This presentation will review how the CPSC collects injury and incident data, and determines hazards, as well as highlight current CPSC fire-hazard reduction projects.
