Presenter: Mark Weisberg, PhD, ABPP, FASCH & Alfred Clavel, Jr., MD

In spite of multiple different treatments from various health providers and enthusiastic claims, experience would indicate that treatment of low back pain (LBP) does not have satisfactory results. Equally puzzling is that most structural spine problems attributed to causing LBP such as degenerative spine disease and herniated disk are found in pain-free individuals. Low back pain is very common: 80% of adults experience at least one episode of severe disabling pain in their life. LBP is the second most common complaint in physician offices. The experience of pain and disability may include loss of reciprical movement, prolonged guarding and bracing, restricted movement patterns, poor posture and body mechanics, and deconditioning. Dysregulated psychophysiological states including hypervigilance create patterns of avoidance alternating with enhanced somatic awareness that trap people to continue the quest for the elusive or sink into feelings of hopelessness and despair. New research in pain mechanisms, including the discovery of neuroplasticity, pain modulation, neurogenic inflammation and mind-body interactions now challenge our traditional approaches to the treatment and management of chronic conditions. We are rapidly discovering the neurobiological mechanisms that provide the connectivity and interaction between the mind, body, and spirit. Hypnosis provides both a tool and language that can help unlock the secrets of internal self-healing for LBP sufferers. Participants will learn the latest research on hypnosis, neuroplasticity, and pain reduction. They will acquire powerful hypnotic strategies for reducing the frequency, intensity, and intrusiveness of chronic low back pain.
