Presenter: Avrohom Krauss

Immigration posed significant challenges for the immigrant and the Jewish community rallied its support. HIAS, JDC and other important organizations helped with the immigration process and assisted the needy by providing food, shelter, health care, and their religious needs. Education, occupational training and job placement were some of the programs created by the Baron Hirsch Fund. Orphanages, homes for the aged, and burial associations were vital services provided to this community. Paper trails were left behind that shed light on immigrant life and when available, contain records of genealogical interest. This session will survey those organizations that made their contribution to the immigrant community in the United States and demonstrate how to access genealagicaly relevant material.
