30075 - The Hurricanes of 2017: Low-Slope Roof Findings and Recommendations for Designers and Contractors $28.00
Select Format:

Format: MP3 Audio Download or Compact Disc

Presenter: Tom Smith

Hurricanes in the fall of 2017 caused extensive building damage in portions of Florida, Texas and throughout Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.? The speaker investigated roof system performance in Texas and the U.S. Virgin Islands.? This presentation will provide an overview of performance of roof systems, rooftop equipment and roof-mounted photovoltaic panel arrays.? It will also provide recommendations for enhancing performance of these items, and performing wind vulnerability assessment of existing roofs.?

Guidance will also be provided for performing forensic investigations, with special considerations for areas struck by two hurricanes in one season.???

1.?Interior water leakage from breached roof membranes often causes significant economic loss and prolonged interruption of building occupancy.? The impact of poor roof performance can affect individual building owners and occupants, and in the case of this year's hurricanes, poor widespread performance had significant impact on communities.? It is important to recognize the critical role that roofs can play in avoiding catastrophic interruptions.
2.?Wind-blown rooftop equipment caused extensive roof membrane damage and interior water leakage.? Attendees will learn issues associated with rooftop equipment, and techniques to avoid damage.?
3.?The 2017 hurricane season was the first time that a large number of rooftop solar panel arrays were exposed to high winds.? Many performed well, others did not.? Attendees will learn issues that affect performance.
4.?A significant amount of the damage was related to roof system and/or rooftop equipment that was very vulnerable to wind damage.? Attendees will learn the importance of building owners having their roof assembly evaluated prior to a storm, and mitigating the vulnerability if it exists.??
5.?Performing a forensic investigation many days/weeks after an event, and/or performing an investigation after an area has been struck by a second hurricane is challenging.? Attendees will learn techniques to consider when performing investigations.
