Terri A. Cavaliere, DNP RN NNP-BC
Abstract
Expertise in genetics is an inescapable reality in clinical practice. The depth of knowledge required by neonatal nurses has increased exponentially and many have been inadequately prepared to meet the challenges. This symposium presents an overview of genetics that will prepare staff nurses to meet the genetic/genomic competencies necessary for practice. Content will include the Human Genome Project, history of genetics, basic science of genetics, genomics, genetic relationship between genetics and human disease, application of genetics in patient care (pharmacogenetics, gene therapy, prenatal and newborn testing & screening, ethics and genetics)
Learning Objectives
1. Discuss the relationship between genetics and human disease.
2. Review the basic science of genetics.
3. Discuss the application of genetics in patient care.
