Hypnosis for Weight Loss & Lasting Success: The Patient's Experience of Avoiding the "Adipose Complex"

Tom Barr, PhD

In recent years, food laboratories in the United States and Europe have conducted numerous studies that shed light and add to the science of why we overeat and why obesity is becoming the most expensive health risk to Americans. This workshop will review the latest research on why we overeat. Physical and psychological recovery is an important concern for patients having had weight loss surgery. We will focus on the physical and emotional experience of the patient and body dysmorphia, that is not "seeing" oneself as others do. We will address how brief mind-body approaches can aid in resolving these conditions and enhance lasting recovery. This will include comprehensive assessment and treatment strategies with specific suggestions for hypnotic intervention. Treatment methods will include psychotherapy, social support, and "body-awareness therapies" such as massage, yoga, martial arts, and exercise. The format will include lecture, discussion and case presentation, and demonstration.

Attendees will learn and be able to convey to their patients that successful weight loss and its maintenance is a complex, multi-dimensional process. This process involves improving both the clinician's and patient's understanding of nutritional issues, metabolic and endocrine issues, behavioral issues in terms of lifestyle and eating, physical activity interventions, and social issues, all relating to both the weight loss and effective adjustment post-weight loss. With this as a foundation, clinicians will learn methods to enhance the weight loss experience and the adjustment afterward.
