This presentation will go through the evolution of smoke control requirements in the building and fire codes as they apply to high-rise buildings. It will provide the reader a better understanding of how these requirements evolved and what is now required by the primary codes used in the US.

Ms. Gilyeat has a B.S. in Fire Protection Engineering from the University of Maryland and has over 30 years of experience serving as a fire protection engineer.  She currently serves as a Principal for Koffel Associates and supervises a team of seven engineers.  She has developed and taught courses on NFPA 101®, The Life Safety Code®, the Fire Safety Evaluation System (FSES), and NFPA 99, Standard for Health Care Facilities.  She currently is an instructor for the CMS, Basic Life Safety Code course.   Ms. Gilyeat sits on a number of technical committees and chairs, NFPA 115, Standard for Laser Fire Protection.  She is a registered Professional Engineer in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC and was recently appointed to her second term as a Maryland State Fire Commissioner.

Mr. Talley has a B.S. in Fire Protection Engineering from the University of Maryland and has over 5 years of experience as a consulting fire protection engineer for Koffel Associates. He has served as a design and consulting engineer on number of high-rise existing and new structures and has recently passed his professional engineering exam in fire protection.
