Working on a project with a roof consultant is sometimes viewed as a bad thing by a roofing contractor. Actually, the presence of a consultant can often be a positive experience and even advantageous for the roofing contractor. In this session the general reasons why an owner may employ a roof consultant and the general responsibilities of a roof consultant are explored. Also, strategies for developing a relationship with a roof consultant that will result in a positive experience for the roofing contractor will be presented. Session material will be presented at an intermediate level with 25% residential material and 75% commercial material.

Kami Farahmandpour is a forensic engineer specializing in the evaluation and repair of building envelopes. He is a Fellow of RCI, a Licensed Professional Engineer in several states, a Certified Construction Specifier and a Certified Construction Contract Administrator. He is also a Registered Roof Consultant, a Registered Waterproofing Consultant and a Registered Exterior Wall Consultant, making him one the first few Registered Building Envelope Consultants. He has been very active in many organizations including RCI and SWR Institute. He is a past Associate Director of SWR Institute, has served as president of CAC-RCI, and current treasurer of CAC Building Envelope Foundation, not to mention several committees he has chaired or participated in. He has received many awards in the past.

Allen Hughes, Vice President, Operations, CRS, Inc. specializes in all aspects of commercial roofing systems. From estimating to installation, Allen's knowledge and passion for the industry is the driving force behind his remarkable reputation, growth, and success. From daily project reviews to weekly progress meetings to site inspections, he has refined his roofing expertise and experience in all phases of the industry. Allen Hughes has over 12 years of experience in the commercial roofing industry. Allen got his start working for CRS, Inc., as a quality assurance representative. Subsequently he assumed responsibilities as Roofing Superintendent, later to become VP of Operations. Allen serves on several committees for the Carolina Roofing and Sheet Metal Contractors Association, Inc. and the National Roofing Contractors Association.

Jason P. Wilen, Director, Technical Services, NRCA, licensed architect, holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology, and is a licensed architect in Illinois. Jason is also certified as a Construction Document Technologist by the Construction Specifications Institute and as a Registered Roof Observer by RCI, Inc. He has worked for traditional and forensic architectural firms, most recently serving as vice president for the Chicago firm Brook Architecture. He is a past president of the Northern Illinois Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute and currently serves on the board of the Chicago area chapter of the Roof Consultants Institute. For NRCA, he is a Director of Technical Services and is responsible for developing technical documents, responding to requests for technical assistance, coordinating with technical committees and contributing articles to Professional Roofing magazine.
