90 minutes presentation

At a large nonprofit serving Hispanic immigrants, a nine-month wellness program was instituted for children ages 8-12 and their parents. Because of the program’s success, it was extended to younger children (as young as two years old) and grandparents. The program includes these elements, among others:

  • Learning about 24 “superfoods” and ways to prepare them;
  • Increasing physical activity;
  • Taking personal responsibility for wellness;
  • Experiencing new alternatives to existing self-care practices;
  • Increasing self-esteem.
Learnings from the design and implementation of this program are applicable to many participant populations. In the program, the arts are used extensively (including film, story, and song as well as painting and drawing), hands-on learning is emphasized, and the cultural values and heritage of the participants are honored. The NLP strategies that are used include anchoring, somatic syntax, modeling, identity, perceptual positions, circle of excellence, and ritual.

Evaluations have shown the program to be very successful in inculcating new, healthier practices in the children and their parents. It has also strengthened the participating families in many ways—and has substantially increased interest in leadership and advocacy roles among the parents.
