Learn about this Fire Protection Research Foundation study that develops baseline friction loss coefficients for the types of fire hose commonly used by today's fire service, and identifies additional performance characteristics that should be considered for friction loss calculations. The project directly addresses a topic specifically covered by NFPA 1961: Standard on Fire Hose (2007 edition) and NFPA 1002: Standard for Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Professional Qualifications (2009 edition).

Casey Grant is Program Director for the Fire Protection Research Foundation, an affiliate of the NFPA. He holds a Bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland and a Master's degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, both in Fire Protection Engineering, and he is a Registered Professional Engineer in the states of California and Tennessee. Casey is a Fellow of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, and has one fire protection related U.S. patent.

Joe Scheffey is Director of Fire Protection Research and Development at Hughes Associates, Inc. For nearly 30 years he has been involved with manned fire fighting tests, among other research projects. In addition to numerous publications and professional awards, he is a member of multiple NFPA Technical Committees and is the past chair of two committees. Mr. Scheffey has a B.S. in Fire Protection Engineering, University of Maryland, and he has his professional engineering license in nine states.
