18359 - Cook County Administration Building Fire Investigation
[CD]
$23.00

Presenter: Kevin LaMalva, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, Inc.

The Cook County Administration Building in Chicago, IL, experienced a fire on 17 October 2003 which resulted in six occupant deaths. An investigation was undertaken to evaluate the impact that a properly operating smoke louver would have had on the tenability conditions of the southeast stairway where the victims were found after the fire. Computer simulations using Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) were performed as part of the investigation. Model outputs for time-dependent carbon monoxide concentration, oxygen concentration, air temperature, and visibility obscuration were used to characterize the tenability conditions in the southeast stairway under different scenarios. This presentation would enhance attendee’s knowledge of the following: fire dynamics modeling techniques, naturally-ventilated smoke control system performance, and principles of fire forensics.
