Presenter: Teresa Garcia-Sanchez MA, ECP

We all meet challenging clients at times: the clients who don’t follow the textbook examples of how therapy should work. When this happens, as it inevitably will, what do you do? An example of a male client in a group therapy session will be presented. He was disrupting the group process and he was disrespectful of others’ issues, yet had some very challenging existential questions of his own.

A description of the structure used in group work, examples of brief experiential metaphors utilized, and a transcript with the explanation of the therapist-generated metaphor will be provided. Some exercises and tales that can quickly engage a potentially resistant client by metaphorically letting him see other options will be proposed. From there the therapist-generated metaphor gently and joyfully guided the client through processes that open up the prospect of a reframed perception. A group exercise will be shown that helps people in a group see how working with one of the members can make verifiable changes in the flexibility of the body of the others, demonstrating thus the mind-body connection and the influence one person can have on the group.

Attendees will learn flexibility and the usefulness of utilizing in therapy anything that’s happened to them in life provided that it is useful to the client. They will be more open to learn from every day experience and be ready to share their own learning in order to help disoriented clients.

During and at the conclusion of this session, the attendee will be able to:
-> Explain how being creative and utilizing effects, such as surprise, one can elicit a good rapport, even with very disrupting clients;
-> Describe how to help patients accept that often, the process of living is more challenging than having all the existential responses;
-> Lead group sessions with Ericksonian Psychotherapy and Conversational Hypnosis; and
-> Locate three or more suggestions in the script that will help the client to enjoy the process of life rather than looking for answers to impossible question.
