Data from the USFA's National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) combined with NFPA's annual fire department experience survey tell us how big the fire problem is, what the leading causes of fires are, and what kind of progress we are making. There's widespread agreement that this data is valuable, but also that its quality and ease of collection could be improved. Several groups have received AFG grants to address issues related to quality, better documentation of structural firefighting, fire department performance measures, firefighter injuries, and youth firesetting. NFPA and NIST sponsored a workshop on "Today and Tomorrow's Fire Data" in 2014 to discuss these findings. This session will provide an overview of the discussions on current practices and proposed future directions.
