Studies suggesting a relationship between oral infection and systemic diseases have been in the news for some time. The best studied of these associations, diabetes, has a reciprocal relationship with periodontitis. Diabetics are more susceptible to periodontitis and diabetics with periodontitis have more trouble controlling their blood sugar. What about other systemic diseases like cardiovascular disease? This course will explore the mechanisms of the associations and examine potential treatments for the patient with periodontitis. What is the role of the dentist in the management of systemic diseases?
