F2 Music & the Word: Marriage Made in Heaven or a Shotgun Wedding
Mr. Roger Holland
One primary characteristic that distinguishes liturgical music from other forms of music is the text. Even when creating an original text, and especially when working with a pre-existing text, the challenge for composers is to honor the meaning and inherent rhythm of the text while creating music that brings life and a freshness that compels the listener and singer alike to participate in the worship experience. The criteria one should consider when selecting and evaluating music for the liturgy, given the necessary congruence of the two elements, must include the culture of the worshiping community, privileging their native genius along with the traditions of the church as well as contemporary practices.
