As obesity increases worldwide, a host of chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and autoimmune conditions have also grown to epidemic levels. The clinical association between obesity and these diseases cannot be overlooked. Aging related conditions begin relatively early in life, evidenced by the long-term progression of atherosclerosis preceding diagnosis of clinical cardiovascular disease. Inflammation, precipitated by endotoxemia, acts as a trigger contributing to endothelial dysfunction, obesity and cardiometabolic abnormalities. These conditions may be present for an extended window of pre-clinical signs and symptoms before a clinical diagnosis is made. Lifestyle modification provides an effective and long-lasting solution to managing cardiovascular risk factors as well as clinical conditions including obesity and diabetes. A food plan (as a component of a lifestyle change program) that emphasizes on phytonutrient intake may produce favorable physiological changes.
