Landsmanshaftn (hometown societies) were popular social societies for late nineteenth and early to mid- twentieth century immigrants and families. They left behind a paper trail of important, often underutilized records. Many societies deposited files with YIVO and the American Jewish Historical Society (AJHS), and are available at the Center for Jewish History (CJH) in New York. Records also exist in Boston, Baltimore, Israel, South Africa and beyond. This session will focus on what landsmanshaftn records are, where they are found and how a genealogist can put them to good use.
