Kabbalistic Meditation and Contemporary Hypnosis
Moshe Torem, MD; Sherwin A. Yaffe. MD

Audio Sample:

In recent years, the Kabbalah, the Jewish mystical tradition has been the focus of much attention. However, far less publicized is the central role of meditation in the study and practice of the Kabbalah. This workshop will be both didactic and experiential. First, we will review and discuss the development of the Kabbalah using traditional Jewish sources from biblical times to the present. An emphasis will be placed on the core Kabbalistic text - the Zohar (Book of Splendor). Next, we will discuss the basic foundations of the Kabbalah with specific attention to the Sephirot, the sacred names of God, the mysteries of the Hebrew alphabet and the Kabbalistic tradition of Gematria (Numerology). We will then define the various metaphysical states achieved by the early Kabbalists. Following this, we will explore the different forms of Kabbalistic meditation with an emphasis on visual imagery and forms of breathing. We will then discuss hypnotic experiences of early and present day Hassidic Rabbis and note the importance of trance like states in this group. The workshop will be concluded with a discussion of the similarities and differences between contemporary hypnosis and Kabbalistic meditation.
Attendees of this wo
rkshop will learn how to integrate spirituality based meditation and imagery into their practice of hypnotherapy. Moreover, attendees will learn how to use spiritual wisdom and ancient meditative practices in terms of their effectiveness and relevance to their practice of holistic healing.

At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to…

Learn the development of the Kabbalistic tradition from biblical times to the present;

Understand the basic Kabbalistic ideas and how they apply in Kabbalistic meditation; and

Learn to understand and experience at least 3 methods of Kabbalistic meditation and
compare these methods with current hypnotic techniques.
