Urban Homesteading
Rachel Kaplan

Urban Homesteading--a series of strategies for localization, enhanced health and wellness for people and their communities, and a direct response to global sized crises like peak oil and climate change--is happening in every small and large city in our country. It is a proactive people powered response to our degenerative industrially-sponsored problems. This slide show presentation and question and answer forum will tell you why the movement's happening now, what it looks like on the ground, and how you can join in.

Rachel Kaplan is a somatic psychotherapist, educator, permaculture designer and mother. She has been an urban gardener for over 15 years, and belongs to a bi-coastal family of farmers and lovers of the land. She is a passionate advocate for the simple life and the work of transition our culture currently faces. She holds two Masters degrees, one in Multidisciplinary Art and the other in Counseling Psychology. She is the author of Urban Homesteading: Heirloom Skills for Sustainable Living (with K. Ruby Blue). She has written and edited numerous books, including two collections of her performance works, The Probable Site of the Garden of Eden and Diaspora: Stories from the Cities. She lives in Northern California with her partner and daughter on their homestead, Tiny Town Farm.
