Sports injuries are still prevalent even though the use of mouthguards is increasing in organized sports. When a patient is involved in a traumatic incident, whether or not it is sports related, the dentist is called upon to quickly and efficiently relieve the pain and save the teeth. This course will investigate the diagnostic procedures needed to determine which treatment modality should be used, and discuss various techniques to handle these emergencies. An overview of various types of injuries to the teeth that can occur such as luxations, fractures and avulsions will be provided. Diagnosis and treatment of these injuries will be discussed, along with the prevention of these injuries in organized sports.
