Genealogists rely on access to records. This is being challenged due to worldwide laws and regulations impeding access to genealogical records. Privacy has become the issue to access to records. On May 25, 2018 the European Union?s General Data Privacy Regulation became effective. The regulation includes the prohibition of the publication of personal data of living persons, especially when it is considered "special" personal data, resulting in archives removing records from their websites. The ?right to be forgotten? which began in the European Union in 2014 has spread globally, most recently to Canada with the proposed Office of Privacy Commissioner?s advocating a EU type program. In the United States individual state actions are trying to incorporate the right to be forgotten. Hamburg Germany?s Archivist destroyed 1 million death records. Social media data breaches, facial recognition, etc. are issues we?re facing. Learn what you can do to preserve records access.
