Magyar Zsido Okleveltar (MZO) is an 18-volume compendium of documents about Hungarian Jews covering almost 800 years of history. MZO is an example of a Hungarian Jewish effort to replicate the monumentalist style of historiography popular in Germany in the 19th century, which attempted to gather every relevant document on a given topic from government archives as a first step to analyzing them and creating a master narrative. The volumes are written in, German, Hungarian, and Latin, the same languages as the source materials but even without knowing these languages after learning how to search the extensive indices of places, subjects, and names, it is possible to find nuggets that will advance your family research. The speaker will show how to use these indices to search volumes providing examples from her own research. She will also provide a list of common terms to assist researchers.
