This presentation details the conflicts that can arise between the fire and life
safety provisions of the building codes and sustainable design aspirations,
including why these conflicts occur and how to harmonize these seemingly
divergent objectives. Leaders in the construction industry will describe
specific ways of using performance-based design to meet safety
requirements and achieve sustainability goals and energy efficiency while
also preserving the cultural fabric of the built heritage.
