Description:

The current electrical grid is getting outdated for modern electricity delivery, wastes a lot of generated power, pollutes the environment and is liable to attacks from hackers and terrorists. As a result, efforts have been underway to enhance both the electric power systems as well as the information systems. These efforts are divided in the following two key categories:

1. Upgrading of existing grid by adding :smart” features
2. New “smart grid” for renewable energy sources

This session will summarize:

1. Major initiatives by the Government, investors and the utility Industry
2. “Smart” technologies for existing grid upgrades and new grid development
3. Potential opportunities for Electrical Contractors (both, line and building)

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Matt Syal serves as a professor of Construction Management in the School of Planning, Design and Construction at Michigan State University.  He is a LEED® accredited professional and received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (Construction Engineering and Management) from Penn State University.  Prior to joining academic world in 1988, he worked in the construction industry in the Boston area with a general contracting company and also, with construction companies in Asia, Middle East and Africa.

Dr Syal has won several recognitions for his teaching and Research.  He has conducted research projects and published extensively in the areas of Construction Project Management, Sustainable Built Environment and Housing.  His recent green buildings related activities include projects for ELECTRI International and AGC.  He has been involved in over 45 research projects funded by the industry, associations and foundations, state and national government agencies, and international agencies.  He has published over 80 refereed/professional papers and 40 project reports/monographs.  In addition, he has served as an advisor or consultant to over 25 industry and government organizations in the U.S. and worldwide.
