Fertilizer Rates and Ratio Recommendations for Herbaceous Perennial Plant Production - Helen Kraus

Helen Kraus, North Carolina State University Raleigh, North Carolina

Fertilizer rate and ratio of nitrogen (N), phosphorus, (P), and potassium (K) both impact growth and flowering of herbaceous perennials. However, recommendations for the nutrient rate and N:P:K ratio have not been investigated carefully for herbaceous perennials. We conducted a series of experiments to determine the effects of N, P, and K rates and N:P:K ratio on flowering and vegetative growth of several herbaceous perennials. This work indicates that herbaceous perennials have very different nutrient requirements from either annual herbaceous plants or woody perennial plants. Attend this session and learn how to select and manage fertilizer for herbaceous perennial production.
