Home-based hypnotic intervention in Sickle Cell Disease- A controlled, cross-over design pilot study of pain, sleep, and quality of life
Daniel Handel, MD; Gwenyth Wallen PhD, RN
Format: MP3 Audio file download

Sickle Cell disease patients must deal with intermittent severe pain crises that often require hospitalization, but studies demonstrate that daily chronic disruptions by pain and sleep disturbances are even more common and life-changing. There is a significant gap in knowledge and practice relating to managing chronic pain and chronic symptoms in adult sickle cell patients. This session will detail the methodology and study design for this pilot study to determine a low intensity intervention requiring home-based self-hypnosis for improving chronic pain and sleep disturbance and impact on mood. This session will document also the measure of hypnotizability and its relationship to outcomes in this study. Results of this study will be shared and recommendations for future studies will be discussed.
