The National Library of Scotland has a 300-year history and houses many national treasures from the military order for the massacre of Glencoe to Earl Haig's diaries from the First World War. The library is housed in a 15-story listed historic building in the center of the Old Town of Edinburgh and had serious issues related to fire safety. During this session you will first look at the history of major fires within the historic old town and the fire risk assessment process that led to a $30M fire safety project to safeguard the collections for future generations. The second part will examine the issues surrounding managing a complex fire safety project within an operational building holding over 10 million historic documents.

Bill Jackson MRICS was Head of Estates for the National Library of Scotland from 1988 to 2011. He is a Chartered Building Surveyor with over 33 years experience working with historic buildings.
