The Cause Determination chapter of the 2008 edition of NFPA 921: Guide for Fire and Explosion Investigations, has been completely revised for the 2011 edition. Learn why the chapter was revised, how it differs from previous editions, how the changes may affect your cause determination methodology, and why for the first time the term "negative corpus" appears in NFPA 921.

Joseph Carey, Esq., is co-chairman of Robinson & Cole LLP's Fire & Explosion Group, and a principal member of the NFPA 921 technical committee. He chaired the Task Group that wrote the committee's proposal for the new Cause Determination chapter that will appear in the next edition of 921. He has served on IFSTA validation committees for Introduction to Fire Origin and Cause, 3rd. ed. and Fire Investigator 2nd ed. A former local and state prosecutor, he is admitted to practice law in New York and Connecticut.
