Live fire service training evolutions are an effective training method, but they can expose trainees and instructors to significant hazards. Each year thousands of firefighters are injured during training, some during live fire training evolutions. NFPA 1403: Standard on Live Fire Training Evolutions provides requirements for live training evolutions, but the committee responsible for the standard wants to add detail to improve safety. This research is being conducted by the Fire Protection Research Foundation and is supported with a DHS/ FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Research Grant. This session provides you with an assessment of the thermal hazards of live fire training evolutions by (1) developing guidance for use by training instructors based on the hazards associated with live fire training evolutions and (2) identifying the knowledge gaps not addressed by the collected information and the establishment of a test plan to address these gaps.

Daniel Madrzykowski has a Masters of Science degree in Fire Protection Engineering from the University of Maryland. He has conducted research in the areas of fire suppression, large fire measurements, fire investigation and fire fighter safety.
