Variable Orifice Multi-Application Fire Sprinkler
Track(s): Fire Suppression, Research

Dr. Ralph Mehr, Israel Fire Protection Association

Audio Sample:

In order to improve the performance of the fire sprinklers, a new conception of operation is suggested. The basic idea is to build a fire sprinkler that incorporates a mechanism that changes the orifice size as a function of the pressure. Higher pressure will produce a larger orifice and much more flow than a regular sprinkler would provide. The first sprinkler to be opened will discharge much more water than would a regular one but will decrease the flow as more sprinklers open.
