The 2011 NEC® now requires all building photovoltaic (PV) systems of 80 volts or greater to be protected by a listed PV arc-fault circuit Interrupter. In response to this new requirement, UL has published the first edition of an outline of investigation for Photovoltaic DC Arc-Fault Circuit Protection, designated Subject 1699B. This presentation will cover the feasibility of DC arc fault protection in PV systems and the development of the safety requirements for this protection. The various types of arcing faults in PV systems and the challenges for arc fault detection schemes in being able to respond to this arcing to mitigate the risk of fire ignition will also be addresse
