The Fire Protection Research Foundation is developing a project to investigate sprinkler protection criteria for exposed expanded plastics stored in racks. NFPA 13 protection criteria for rack storage currently exclude exposed expanded plastic commodities, prompting users to use criteria from other sources. The presentation will provide information on full-scale fire testing that is being developed to investigate protection criteria for this high-challenge fire scenario. The testing will investigate the use of vertical barriers within the racks to delay lateral fire spread and allow the fire to be controlled or suppressed by the ceiling sprinkler system.
