Requirements for arc flash labels were first introduced in the 2002 NEC and NFPA 70E-2009, and they've been expanding ever since. This session will address the similarities and differences between the NEC and NFPA 70E arc flash labeling requirements, including those in the upcoming 2015 edition of NFPA 70E. It will highlight the intricacies involved in situations where electrical equipment may have two or more possible incident energy values (or PPE requirements) because of different operating scenarios such as maintenance switches, tie breaker positions, and utility or standby sources, and suggest methods for dealing with these. Also discussed will be various equipment construction types and their potential impact on arc propagation and worker exposure and how they interact with arc flash labeling practices.
