Speaker: Dr. Robert Marx, DDS, University of Miami School of Medicine
About the speaker: Dental degree, Northwestern University; professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery and division chief, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Description:

Bisphosphonates, as well as some new “antiresorptive” drugs, are known to cause exposed necrotic bone in the jaws. Their common mechanism of action is impairment or death of osteoclasts that remodel and renew bone. This course will distinguish between all of the current drugs on the market and their delivery (intravenous, subcutaneous or oral) related to severity, prevention protocols, treatment protocols and how they may impact dental treatments including dental implants, occlusal loading and periodontal procedures.

Learning objectives:
Participants will be able to:

  • Understand the relative risks of bisphosphonate therapy related to each individual drug, route of administration and duration of therapy
  • Understand the relative risks in patients taking bisphosphonates related to each potential dental/oral surgical procedure
  • Learn about the diseases of osteopenia and osteoporosis and the terms involved in their diagnosis so that they can discuss management modifications with treating physicians
