John Perkins

Founder and President, John Perkins Foundation for Reconciliation and Development. John Perkins is considered the father of CCHF. For over 40 years he has been a leader in Christian community development, and a powerful Christian voice for justice and reconciliation. Born the son of a sharecropper in one of the poorest areas of Mississippi, John's mother died of malnutrition when he was a baby. He fled to California at age 17 when his brother was murdered by a town marshal. Although Dr. Perkins vowed never to return, in 1960 after he accepted Christ, he returned to his boyhood home to share the gospel of Christ with those still living in the region. His outspoken support and leadership role in civil rights demonstrations resulted in repeated harassment, imprisonment and beatings. Dr. Perkins helped found CCHF in 1978 with Lance Loberg and H Spees. Today, in his 80s, Dr. Perkins continues to be one of the leading evangelical voices to come out of the the American civil rights movement. He is an internationally known author, speaker and teacher on issues of racial reconciliation and Christian community development.
