Surviving the Unexpected: A Tornado Flattens our Nursery and How We Fought Back - Peter van Berkum

Peter van Berkum, Van Berkum Nursery Deerfield, New Hampshire

On July 24, 2008, a tornado tore through Van Berkum Nursery, leaving it in shambles. Peter will tell the story of the storm, the immediate process of rebuilding to keep the nursery alive, the long-term re-construction projects, and the larger implications of the disaster. He will include some things that we might advise our colleagues to do to prepare for this century's extreme weather. (He also will include flooding and ice storms in the discussion). On the brighter side, he will discuss what happened to allow them to miss only three days of shipping, an unusual 'brand' that emerged from the experience, and silver-lining themes that proved to be a marketing bonanza.
