Roof coating manufacturers attribute many benefits to their roof coating systems including protection of underlying roofing from damaging ultraviolet rays, reduced thermal cycling of the roof, reduced energy costs, and improved waterproofing performance. Owners are eager to embrace the promises of roof coatings as an inexpensive way to address their roofing problems, but owners and designers need to be realistic about the expectations for roof coatings and understand how to use them effectively. This presentation summarizes major coating types available and discusses applications that each type is best suited for. The presenter will draw upon his experience in order to present several principles for effective use of roof coatings. The presenter explains the importance of identifying suitable roofs and suitable coating products, what physical coating characteristics are important for successful coating performance, and appropriate maintenance expectations for coating systems. Session material will be presented at an intermediate level and is applicable to commercial and residential contractors.
