25041 - Relative Impact Resistance of New and Aged Roofing Materials $28.00
Select Format:

Presenter: Tanya Brown
Format: Audio

Hailstorms consistently cause some of the higher losses for property insurers and reinsurers, often exceeding $1 billion in a year. Part of IBHS? multi-faceted hail research program includes relative performance comparisons of the impact resistance of roofing products using standardized (UL 2218, FM 4473) and other impact test methods. Testing of several different shingle classes will be discussed, along with the IBHS roof aging farm and future test plans for aged materials. This material will be presented at an intermediate level and will be focused on steep slope.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify different classes of shingles and explain what makes them different
  • Identify roofing impact test methods
  • Determine the impact performance differences amongst shingle classes
  • Identify variables that may affect how products age, and how aging affects impact resistance performance
