Effectively Handling an Enforcement Driven OSHA while Achieving Operational Excellence and Profitability through Safety

This program will examine the changes that are occurring in OSHA within the Obama Administration. Specifically, the program will look at Congressional actions and legislation to expand OSHA’s role in the workplace. The program will also examine the new enforcement strategy for OSHA as well as the safety and health standards most likely will undertake in the next four (4) years. The second portion of the program will examine issues that will be impacting workplace safety and health in the future. Specifically, the program will examine the increase of injuries to baby boomers as well as the incoming workforce and their demanding safety and health problems. Part of the program will examine how a company can practically implement a safety and health management system as well as a comprehensive wellness program. Session material will be presented at a beginner level with 50% of the material being applicable to commercial contractors and 50% applicable to residential contractors.

Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., Partner, Fisher & Phillips LLP, co-chairs the firm's Workplace Safety and Catastrophe Management Practice Group. Prior to joining Fisher & Phillips, Ed was the Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health. Named by President George W. Bush to head OSHA, he served from April 2006 to November 2008. During his tenure at OSHA, workplace injury, illness and fatality rates dropped to their lowest levels in recorded history. For more than 30 years, Ed has worked in the labor and employment area, focusing on occupational safety and health issues, workplace violence risk assessment and prevention, whistleblower protection, and accident and fatality prevention. He also served on the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission in Washington, DC, chairing the Commission from March 1990 to February 1994. Ed was named one of the "50 Most Influential EHS Leaders" by both EHS Today (2010 and 2011) and Occupational Hazards (2008) magazines. He is a member of the Employee Health Safety and Security Special Expertise Panel for the National Society for Human Resource Management and he is "AV" Peer Review Rated by Martindale-Hubbell.
